Acting Secretary Melchor P. Rosales of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) will hold a dialogue today (October 9, 2009) with local authorities of calamity areas to assess the situation in their respective localities after Typhoon Ondoy and take concrete steps to move on.
Rosales said the “Post-Ondoy Reconstruction: A Dialogue with LGUs” aims to lay the groundwork for reconstruction in the local government units which were at the receiving end of the wrath of “Ondoy”.
“It is now time for us to work together and help one another in our efforts to recover, reconstruct and rebuild,” he said.
During the meeting, local chief executives of typhoon-struck areas shall report on the effects of Ondoy in their respective areas, the status of their rehabilitation and relief efforts, and the problems that need to be addressed immediately.
Expected to attend the dialogue to be held at the Multi-Purpose Hall in Camp Crame, Quezon City are provincial governors, city and municipal mayors, local police and fire chiefs of Metro Manila, Laguna, Rizal, Bulacan and Pampanga.
Last September 26, Typhoon Ondoy dumped heavy rains in Metro Manila and surrounding areas of Luzon, submerging most of the national capital region with up to six meters (20 feet) of water. Around 293 people were killed, thousands of families were left homeless, and more than P108.9 million worth of infrastructure and crops were damaged.
